Online college class in Media Law

During your college winter break, you can earn college credits studying media law -- all while relaxing at home or skiing on vacation. High school seniors looking to earn some college credits may also take the course.

I'm teaching an online course on Communication Law ("Free Speech, Media Law & Democracy") through Adelphi University, where I'm a professor. The 3-credit classes feature video lectures, interactive exercises and class discussions, all of which can be done through your computer. You never need to set foot in an actual classroom.

In the 3-week Media Law class, students learn about the First Amendment, free speech, copyright, libel, protecting confidential sources, getting government records, cyberspace issues and other media law issues from a lawyer and former journalist. The class will run from January 4 to January 23.

$25,000 journalism fellowship to cover religion overseas

USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism is now accepting applications for the Knight Luce Fellowship for Reporting on Global Religion. The fellowship offers stipends for American journalists to report and write stories that illuminate how religion crosses geographic, temporal and ideological borders as well as how it establishes real and virtual boundaries.

Staff reporters, affiliated freelancers and self-employed web journalists, working in the States or abroad, who cover politics, social and cultural issues as well as generalists and religion specialists are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will be awarded stipends from $5,000 to $25,000 to subsidize travel, living and miscellaneous costs.

Within the six-month period of their fellowship, fellows will travel outside the U.S. to report stories that explore how religion, religious institutions, and religious people effect change in on-the-ground social, political and economic conditions. They might examine how ideas and ideologies circulate among home and diaspora communities or how religious and political coexistence and cooperation are promoted or inhibited. These stories will be developed for delivery on multiple platforms – print, radio, TV, online. Finally, at the completion of their projects, several fellows will be invited to spend three days in residence at USC to present their work, hold master classes for journalism students, and give public lectures for the USC community.

Journalism internships @ Staten Island newspaper

The Staten Island Advance, a daily Newhouse newspaper covering New York City's greenest borough, offers a comprehensive internship program for undergraduate and graduate students.

Advance interns get all the same opportunities as full-time staff reporters. They write obituaries, features and profiles. They conduct interviews and cover breaking news. They can work in photography, page design, editing and videography. All interns spend time working on the web desk and learn how to post online news alerts and photo galleries. They can also gain experience in the City Hall or Borough Hall bureaus.

Advance internships are unpaid, and it is preferred but not required that students earn college credit for the experience. Students should be prepared to complete a minimum of two shifts a week. Because the newsroom is open 24/7, shifts are flexible and can work around a student's class schedule.
