Free H.S. journalism teaching program

A free two-week intensive journalism training program is being offered this summer for high school teachers.

The Reynolds High School Journalism Institute offers programs around the country that will enable teachers to help students start a campus newspaper or improve an existing paper, as well as enhance their teaching in journalism, English, social studies and civics.

"Instruction is based on the core tenets of journalism and the skills needed to produce a top-notch scholastic publication, on paper or online," the program's website states. "Topics include: reporting, writing, editing, photojournalism, layout and design, opinion pages, journalistic credibility ethics and responsibilities, the future of daily newspapers and business-side skills. First Amendment matters, privacy and the state of scholastic press freedoms are also key topics."

The Institute pays for air transportation, lodging, meals, cost of instruction, and continuing education credit hours (at the discretion of the university) for participants. Additional benefits include: memberships to scholastic journalism associations, subscriptions to journalism magazines and the beginnings of a journalism library.

Locations and dates will be: Arizona State University, Tempe, June 14-26; Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, July 5-17; University of Nevada, Reno, July 12-24; University of Missouri, Columbia July 12-24; University of Texas at Austin, July 19-31.
