  • Herald Community Newspapers, a chain of 15 weekly papers in Long Island, seeks a full-time reporter based in Garden City -- about 30 minutes from Manhattan. Paid statehouse reporting internships

College and grad students along with recent graduates can apply for a 21-week paid internship in statehouse across the nation.

The Ben Franklin Fellows program begins January 1, 2010. Positions are available in print, broadcasting and multimedia.

"Benjamin Franklin Fellows will not be coffee-fetchers or lunch-lackeys," the ad states. "Franklin Fellows will work in a variety of statehouses across the nation with seasoned correspondents to produce daily news as well investigative pieces. The statehouse beat will challenge fellows to research complex issues, such as government spending, ethics abuse and statewide elections, and report the consequences to citizens. Upon completing their fellowship, participants will have completed a portfolio of professional clips, internet dispatches and broadcasts. Fellows also will have unique networking opportunities with a nationwide collection of state capital bureaus."
