Freelance crime reporters in California

United Reporting, a California-based online news service producing local and statewide crime news, seeks freelance crime reporters to cover local police departments and compile arrest records.

Candidates would be expected to write one crime story a week about the area their agency or agencies cover, as well as retrieve arrest records information up to twice a week.

Rates are $25-50 per story and $25 per agency visit resulting in the collection and timely delivery of fresh arrest records. Daily deadline for assignments is 12 p.m. (noon).

This is the perfect gig for a recent journalism grad or seasoned veteran looking to supplement their income.

All interested candidates are required to meet the following criteria:
• Journalism experience / degree *
• 21 and over
• Clear criminal history background check
• Current driver’s license
• Morning until noon availability
• Provide proof of vehicle insurance
• Computer / Internet / Smartphone / Fax savvy
• Complete CA State W-9 form
• Must be reliable, professional and exhibit the willingness to succeed!
* PREFERRED: College journalism majors, college newspaper experience, daily or weekly newspaper or online publication experience, two or four-year journalism/English degree.
