Entry-level reporter @ Chicago area specialty newspaper

The Fox Valley Labor News, a weekly newspaper in suburban Chicago that covers union news, is seeking a full-time, independent contract reporter with excellent writing, interviewing and copyediting skills to cover organized labor events and write hard news.

Job responsibilities include covering organized labor events/meetings and writing hard news articles. You will be writing stories between 500 and 700 words in length. Five to six stories are required each week. You will be assigned stories, but we also are looking for a reporter who generates their own story ideas.

You also will be responsible for taking pictures at these events. In essence, you are the reporter and photographer, using words and pictures to bring to light the events you are covering. Strong photography skills are a must, as pictures you take will be used on the front cover and throughout the newspaper. If you do not own your own professional camera, a camera is available.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Bachelor’s degree in English or equivalent will be considered. New graduates are encouraged to apply. Reliable transportation and a flexible schedule is a must.
