Entry-level reporter job @ Bronx Times

The Bronx Times, a 17,000-circulation weekly newspaper, is seeking an entry-level reporter to cover several urban and community issues.

Responsibilities: Gather stories, photos and prepare text in assigned community about people, issues, places and events. Present stories in an interesting, accurate and fair manner for publication in the newspaper. Be alert and vigilant for story leads. Conduct Interviews in a friendly and professional manner by telephone or in person. Assign and shoot photos to accompany stories or to standalone. Maintain routine weekly news reporting tasks. Read and interpret submitted news releases, and gather from appropriate offices and agencies, statistical reports and other printed resources that form the basis for news stories, judgment necessary. Attend scheduled meetings of governing bodies at the times they normally meet, including nights and weekends. Develop relationships with community leaders to develop sources. Generate story ideas for assigned community and pitch to Managing Editor / Editor in Chief. Ensure spelling, grammar and syntax are accurate and correct in stories. Perform rewrites as directed.


Requirements:
4 year college degree in journalism, communications, or related field
Daily newspaper experience or two years at a weekly publication are a plus.
Desires to work in an exhilarating environment that places a high value on accuracy, speed and prolificacy.
A car is required.
