A couple newspapers in northeastern states are seeking young reporters:
  • Pennsylvania: The Towanda Daily & Sunday Review, a small daily newspaper in northeast Pennsylvania, seeks a reporter to cover local news and features. Paid summer intern @ Northwest newspaper

The Shelton-Mason County Journal, a weekly 10,000-circulation newspaper near Washington state's capital, seeks a summer intern to work the cops and court beat.

Intern will initially work alongside staff reporter, then fill in for the reporter while she is away for several weeks. The internship will begin in mid to late July. Northwest applicants are preferred but the newspaper will consider all applicants. Salary is listed as "negotiable."

Elmira, N.Y. newspaper seeks paid H.S. interns

The Elmira (N.Y.) Star-Gazette, a 25,500-circulation daily newspaper near the New York-Pennsylvania border, is offering paid internships this summer to high school juniors and seniors.

"The successful candidates will receive hands-on experience in the field of journalism and be paid for their work thanks to a $2,000 grant provided by the Tripp Foundation," the announcement states.

Interested candidates must submit a cover letter, resume (including references) and at least two writing samples (schoolwork is acceptable). The cover letter should state the applicant's perspective on the evolving role of a community newspaper.

Applicants also must have a valid driver's license and auto insurance.

The deadline to apply is Friday. The internship begins in early July and ends before school resumes, or when the candidates must report to college.

Guam newspaper seeks H.S. journalists

The Pacific Daily News, a 20,000-circulation daily newspaper in Guam, seeks high school students to write for its teen section VIBE.

"Students selected for the program will undergo basic journalism training throughout the summer," the ad states. "During the yearlong internship program, VIBE interns interview other teens and write stories about teen-related news, issues, events, features and trends. Stories appear in the weekly VIBE section in Monday's Pacific Daily News, online at www.GuamPDN.com and in the quarterly teen magazine, VIBE Extreme."
