Paid journalism internship @ Oakland newspaper

The East Bay Express, a weekly newspaper in Oakland, is seeking student interns for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. While the internship does not come with a regular salary, interns are paid freelance rates for their published stories and for originally reported blog items. Note: Students must be able to receive school credit.

"Interns contribute to the paper and web site in three ways," the ad states. "First of all, they write short items for our blog, calendar section, and special issues. Those interns who show initiative and writing skills are also welcome to pitch longer stories for our news or music sections. Second, they update and fact-check our online listings, learning the ins and outs of using an online database — a skill that figures prominently in our staff-hiring process. Finally, they assist the editorial department with a variety of clerical and administrative tasks, including but not limited to routing mail, e-mail, and phone calls and processing letters to the editor. Fact-checking and clerical/administrative tasks will take up no more than half of the internship, less depending on your skill level. The rest is dedicated to writing and reporting."

Interns are expected to work about 20 hours a week, and must attend weekly department editorial meetings (currently scheduled for Tuesday afternoons, but subject to change).

To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and clips via e-mail to: Nate Seltenrich, Arts Editor, Nate [dot] Seltenrich [at] EastBayExpress [dot] com or mail to East Bay Express, 620 3rd St., Oakland, CA 94607.
