Magazine seeks marketing director

InTheFray Magazine, an online news and literary magazine that focuses on diversity and inequality, seeks a marketing director to oversee efforts to market the magazine and expand its readership. In 2006 alone, we published articles from 17 countries on five continents, and our articles have won national recognition, including a 2006 Excellence in Online Journalism Award from the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. Our advisory board includes such distinguished figures in journalism and academia as Ray Suarez, William Julius Wilson, and Helen Zia.

QUALIFICATIONS: We are in search of an energetic and talented individual with a strong interest in publishing and marketing. Publishing or marketing experience is helpful, but strong writing abilities, enthusiasm, reliability, and a sense of humor are the most essential qualifications.

The position would offer a unique opportunity to shape a growing organization, gain an intensive education in independent media, online journalism, and online marketing, and work with other individuals with a passion for issues of diversity, human rights, and social justice.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The marketing director will be in charge of increasing the magazine's visibility and expanding its readership through advertising, events, and other kinds of marketing. Tasks include: contacting media and other organizations to inform them about special issues and stories that might be of interest to their audiences and constituencies; working to get our articles linked or excerpted in other sites and print magazines; making advertising purchases in other media and advertising sales on our site; working with other board and staff members to organize events (book readings, performances, panel discussions, etc.) in New York; attending editorial board meetings and communicating with editorial staff to stay up to date with the magazine's content; working with our designer to create advertisements and promotional materials; posting marketing-related updates to our site; overseeing our accounts on social networking sites; and identifying and pursuing other ways to spread the word about the magazine.

Potential candidates should plan to spend at least 5 hours each week fulfilling these responsibilities, and should be able to commit to a minimum of one year for this position.

Note: The organization is currently in a transitional period: We are bringing on new staff, realigning our editorial direction and are launching a new website This is a great opportunity for recent graduates to learn the ins-and-outs of an independent publication. Although this is a part-time commitment, the workload will be significantly more than 5 hours per week for the first few months as we launch fundraising campaigns, and orient new staff.

COMPENSATION: InTheFray has long been an all-volunteer venture, but we have started paying our staff small honorariums, which we plan to increase as the organization grows. For the marketing director position, this would be $200 annually, paid in two installments at the successful completion of each six-month period. (These numbers are subject to change as are currently in the process of overhauling our honorarium payments.)
