Paid internships @ Martha's Vineyard newspaper

The Martha's Vineyard Vineyard Gazette, an 11,000-circulation twice-weekly newspaper in Edgartown, Mass., will be offering two summer editorial internships are designed for college students interested in a newspaper career.

Gazette interns work as reporters, assigned a full list of news and feature stories for publication. One intern also will be responsible for helping to keep the summer calendar of arts and other events. Editorial interns are expected to assist with proofreading, page workflow, online content and other duties as assigned. Interns will have interaction with all departments within the newspaper, as participants not observers.

Qualifications include strong writing skills, a strong interest in the newspaper, the ability to work both independently and in a group environment on deadline, flexibility, curiosity, organization, attention to detail, a strong work ethic and excellent time management. Based on past experience, candidates with a sense of humor fit in best — the Gazette enjoys a casual work environment.

Summer interns are paid $400 a week; generally the job begins around the last week of May and continues until around Labor Day, although we are flexible in consideration of school schedules. Interns work full-time and can expect hours to fluctuate; weekend and evening assignments are part of the job.

Candidates with access to housing on the Vineyard have a definite advantage, as seasonal housing on the Island is in short supply and extremely expensive. Please make clear when applying whether you have summer housing on the Island available to you. A car and valid driver’s license are also expected.

The Gazette is published twice each week during the summer, on Tuesdays and Fridays. To apply, please send your resume, letter of interest and/or any other relevant materials to:

The application deadline is March 4, 2011. Please include a telephone number where you can be reached as well as an e-mail address. When possible, we try to arrange personal interviews with finalists as possible, so let us know if you expect to be on the Island at any point. Otherwise we’ll conduct a phone interview. Selections will be announced by mid-April.
