Reporting internships @ NYC newspaper

The Norwood News, an award-winning, bi-weekly community newspaper in the northwest Bronx, is looking for two or three quality interns for the summer and fall seasons.

At the News, we rely heavily on contributions from our interns. You will not be pushing papers or making coffee. You will be writing serious news stories and other feature articles in a fascinating urban environment. It’s an opportunity to grow as a journalist and improve your reporting/writing skills on every level, while having an impact on a diverse and developing community.

You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to the growing and ground-breaking Bronx News Network, a string of nonprofit newspapers in the Bronx that produces a popular Bronx-wide news website, bronxnewsnetwork.org. All of our interns will also take their own photographs and work on multi-media projects. If you want to experiment with story-telling techniques or video production, we will encourage you every step of the way.

Interns must be able to commit at least 12 hours a week, ideally on consecutive days, but we’re willing to work around your schedule. College and graduate students are encouraged to apply. But it’s also an opportunity for aspiring journalists looking for invaluable clips and experience. Many of our interns have gone on to careers in the industry.

There will also be opportunities to contribute to our bi-lingual west Bronx sister papers, the Mount Hope Monitor and Tremont Tribune.

The summer internship will begin at the end of May and run through August. (Start and end dates are flexible.) The fall internship will run from the end of August until December. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, but don’t hesitate, slots fill up fast.

Writing and/or reporting experience is preferred, but not required. Send a cover letter, resume and at least two clips or writing samples to norwoodnews@norwoodnews.org or via fax, (718) 324-2917.

This is an unpaid internship, but you will be paid a small stipend at the end of the internship. If you want to receive academic credit, we can definitely work that out.
