Journalism scholarships in Idaho

• Don Watkins Memorial Scholarship: $1,500 journalism scholarship is available for graduates of Idaho high schools who have completed at least one year of college. The Don Watkins Memorial Scholarship, funded by the Idaho Press Club, is for students either majoring in journalism or communications, or working for a college or professional media outlet in addition to their studies. The scholarship money is paid directly to the student’s college or university, to cover student fees, tuition or other expenses. To apply, students should submit a one-page resume listing their related work experience; an essay of up to 500 words explaining their interest in a journalism or communications career; a copy of their college transcripts through the 2008 fall semester, including grade-point average; and samples of their journalistic work. Print journalists must submit copies of five articles or photographs; radio or television candidates are asked to submit a recording of up to three of their best news stories, up to a maximum length of 15 minutes. Journalism scholarships in Florida

• Dr. Jack Ramsay Scholarship: The Miami Heat is awarding a $2,500 to a South Florida high school senior who plans to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. Apply by April 4 for the Dr. Jack Ramsay Scholarship. Download an application online.

• Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections Scholarship: Florida residents can apply for a $1,200 scholarship to study journalism. The Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections will award three scholarships. "Applicants must be registered voters who have lived in Florida at least two years and must be majoring in political science, public administration, business administration, journalism or mass communication at an accredited senior college or university," the announcement states. • Hearin-Chandler Journalism Scholarship: $5,000 scholarship for "full-time journalism study, leading to a degree, at a regionally accredited institution." Applicants may be a high school senior, college student, or practicing journalist. Must be a resident of Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Conecuh, Washington, and Monroe counties in Alabama; Santa Rosa and Escambia counties in Florida; George and Jackson counties in Mississippi. Application are due in early March.

• John M. Will Journalism Scholarship: $3,000 scholarship for "full-time journalism study, leading to a degree, at a regionally accredited institution." Applicants may be a high school senior, college student, or practicing journalist. Must be a resident of Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Conecuh, Washington, and Monroe counties in Alabama; Santa Rosa and Escambia counties in Florida; George and Jackson counties in Mississippi. Journalism scholarships in Washington, D.C.

Washington Post High School Writing Seminar and Scholarship Program
Washington, D.C. area high school seniors spend Saturdays in March learning about writing news and feature stories from Post reporters and editors. At program's conclusion, students write a news story and receive critiques. Top two students receive $2,500 college scholarship. Deadline: February 7.

Journalism scholarships in California

1. $10,000 in scholarships is available for high school and college students who live in or attend school in the Bay Area. You don’t have to be a journalism or mass communications major, but you must demonstrate serious intent to pursue a journalism career through strong work samples. "Students are generally selected based on their journalistic ability (as demonstrated by their published work), commitment to journalism, sensitivity to Asian Pacific American issues, financial need and scholastic achievement," according to the Asian American Journalists Association -- San Francisco Chapter, which funds the scholarships. Arkansas Press Women awards a $1,000 scholarship each spring to an undergraduate student — male or female — studying at an Arkansas college or university who is planning a career in mass communications or journalism.

Two journalism scholarships available:

1. Hearin-Chandler Journalism Scholarship: $5,000 scholarship for "full-time journalism study, leading to a degree, at a regionally accredited institution."
   
2. John M. Will Journalism Scholarship: $3,000 scholarship for "full-time journalism study, leading to a degree, at a regionally accredited institution."

4-day science writing fellowship

The National Center for Atmospheric Research invites applicants for a four-day science writing workshop in Boulder, Colo., on June 23-27.

NCAR states: "Our program is a four-day, residential experience open to professional writers, producers, and editors working for print, broadcast, radio, and online media. NCAR will cover costs including airfare, hotel, transport to-from the Denver Airport and Boulder, as well as a daily meal stipend for five NCAR Journalism Fellows. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of writing, producing, or editing experience for a general-interest audience. Freelances, book authors, and writers from nontraditional media may be considered, but should be able to show a substantial portfolio of work."

The deadline to apply is May 16.

Sports journalism scholarships

Eight $3,000 scholarships are available from the NCAA and Freedom Forum for college juniors who have career goals in sports journalism and major in journalism or have experience in campus sports journalism. The deadline is in December.
