Fellowship for young U.S. and Austrian journalists

U.S. and Austrian journalists ages 21-38 can apply for a 7-week all-expenses paid fellowship which gives up to 6 journalists an opportunity to report from and travel in each other's countries.

The U.S.-Austrian Journalism Exchange Fellowships includes international and domestic travel expenses, living expenses, insurance costs, transportation allowances and a stipend.

After receiving a joint orientation session in Washington, D.C, the American fellows travel to Vienna and the Austrian journalists begin their fellowship in Florida at the GOP National Convention to report for their home media organizations. For six weeks, fellows will work at host newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations under the supervision of an editor. The program ends with all fellows reuniting in Vienna for a reception and final program evaluation.

Print, broadcast and freelance journalists are eligible, provided they have at least three years of experience and a strong interest in U.S.‑European affairs. Foreign language proficiency is not required, but is preferred.

UN reporting fellowship for young journalists from developing nations

Young journalists from developing nations can apply for the Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Fund.

Fellows are based in New York for about 10 weeks and report on United Nations’ proceedings for news media in their home countries.

Applicants must be full-time, professional journalists between 25 and 35 years old, be employed by a recognized print, radio, television, or internet media organization, and have a good working knowledge of English. Additionally, applicants must come from a developing nation in Africa, Asia, South America or the Caribbean. Applications will not be accepted from the countries of 2011 fellows: China, Ethiopia, India and Nigeria. Fellows must be able to take a leave of absence of up to two months.

The fellowship will provide: round-trip airfare to New York; accommodations; health insurance for the duration of the fellowship, and a daily allowance to cover food and other necessities.

All-expenses paid social media conference for young journalists from EU and Mideast

Scholarships are available for young journalists and photojournalists from Europe and the Middle East to attend a social media conference in Alexandria, Egypt. All costs related to the event will be covered, including travel, accommodation and meals.

The 10-day conference, titled “Social media in a changing world," is sponsored by the Euro-Mediterranean Academy for Young Journalists (EMAJ) and features sessions and expert lectures in new media, journalism and intercultural dialogue.

Applicants must be citizens of the European Union, Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia or Turkey. They must be between ages 18-35 with at least two years' experience at print, radio, TV or online outlets. And they must have solid English language skills.

9-week fellowship for young European journalists

A 9-week journalism fellowship is available for 12 young journalists from select EU countries.

The fellowship, sponsored by Fondation EurActiv PoliTech and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, is designed to help early career journalists gain experience of European Union policies and online media. One week’s intensive seminar in Berlin will be followed by a six to eight-week internship in Brussels.

A dozen young journalists will be selected. Eight of those should come from Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain or the United Kingdom, and the other four should come from Germany and/or Austria (two from regional and two from national media). All will participate in a five-day intensive seminar in Berlin.

Applicants must have a minimum of two and no more than five years of journalism experience; be employed outside Brussels with professional press card (students, freelancers & former journalists need not apply); and possess good oral and written English, knowledge of a second EU language.

Global journalism fellowship in Toronto for young journalists

Young journalists who aspire to be foreign correspondent can apply for an 8 month fellowship from the University of Toronto. Hurry, the deadline is February 13, 2012.

U of T's Munk School of Global Affairs is offering 10 fellowships to journalists expert knowledge of complex topics. Fellows will be mentored by a professional journalist while freelancing to major media and attend journalism courses and lectures. Fellows graduate with a certificate in global journalism.

Qualifications include a graduate degree, professional degree or equivalent work experience in a specialized field - business, economics, health, technology, science and more - and English fluency. Professional journalism experience is not a requirement.

Applicants must submit a resume, transcripts, two story proposals, work samples, a personal essay, video statement and three recommendation letters.

Apply for a 3-day science journalism fellowship in San Diego

Journalists and writers have the exciting opportunity to apply for the Spring 2012 Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship that is part of Point Loma Nazarene University ’s mission to provide modern education in the sciences and reflective education in philosophy, society, and the arts.

The selected journalist will travel to San Diego , March 20-22, 2012, to attend the 27th annual Kyoto Prize ceremony, VIP presentations, laureate lectures and workshops. Apply for a 2-week foreign correspondent fellowship

Peace Dividend Trust is sponsoring a 2-week long fellowship that will send a journalist to Haiti, Liberia and Afghanistan to cover the organization's work.

The fellow will receive a stipend to travel to PDT's country offices in Port-au-Prince, Monrovia and Kabul to conduct interviews with local entrepreneurs.

The reporting assignment involves blogging, writing 12 articles and editing and producing short videos. Journalists worldwide can apply, but must have solid English skills.

The only application requirement is uploading a 60-second video to YouTube explaining why you'd make a good foreign correspondent. Use "PDT’s Best Fellowship Ever" as your title.

$50,000 fellowships available for young journalists

The Phillips Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2012 Robert Novak Journalism Fellowship Program.

Print and online journalists with less than 10 years of professional experience are eligible. The Foundation created this program to provide fellowships for writing projects by journalists who share its mission to advance constitutional principles, a democratic society and a vibrant free enterprise system.

The Phillips Foundation awards $50,000 full-time and $25,000 part-time fellowships to undertake and complete a one-year project of the applicant's choosing focusing on journalism supportive of American culture and a free society. In addition, the Foundation offers separate yearlong fellowships on the environment, on the benefits of free-market competition, and on law enforcement. There are also Alumni Fund Fellowships funded by donations from current and former Novak Fellows. Alumni Fund Fellowship winners write one magazine-length article on their topic.

The Foundation is looking for journalism projects which are both original and publishable. The winners will deliver four quarterly writing installments with the potential to be published sequentially in a periodical or as a book.

Investigative journalism fellowship for young journalists

Young journalists between the ages of 22 and 38 are eligible to apply for Moment Magazine's Daniel Pearl Investigative Journalism Initiative. The fellowship provides $5,000 to write "in-depth stories about a modern manifestation of anti-Semitism or another deeply ingrained prejudice." Writers will also receive mentoring. $25,000 journalism fellowship to cover religion overseas

USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism is now accepting applications for the Knight Luce Fellowship for Reporting on Global Religion. The fellowship offers stipends for American journalists to report and write stories that illuminate how religion crosses geographic, temporal and ideological borders as well as how it establishes real and virtual boundaries.

Staff reporters, affiliated freelancers and self-employed web journalists, working in the States or abroad, who cover politics, social and cultural issues as well as generalists and religion specialists are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will be awarded stipends from $5,000 to $25,000 to subsidize travel, living and miscellaneous costs.

Within the six-month period of their fellowship, fellows will travel outside the U.S. to report stories that explore how religion, religious institutions, and religious people effect change in on-the-ground social, political and economic conditions. They might examine how ideas and ideologies circulate among home and diaspora communities or how religious and political coexistence and cooperation are promoted or inhibited. These stories will be developed for delivery on multiple platforms – print, radio, TV, online. Finally, at the completion of their projects, several fellows will be invited to spend three days in residence at USC to present their work, hold master classes for journalism students, and give public lectures for the USC community.

Week-long journalism fellowship in Japan

The Kyoto Prize Journalism Program provides fellowships to journalists to assist them in furthering their knowledge and ability to report in greater depth about one or more of the following prize categories: Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts and Philosophy. Selected journalist(s) will travel to Kyoto , Japan to attend the 26th annual Kyoto Prize Award Ceremony on November 10, and subsequent laureate lectures and workshops from November 7-14, 2010. They will also be provided with opportunities to interview the Kyoto Prize Laureates in Japan.

The program is designed for professional science, technology and arts writers and editors in print, radio and broadcast media. The program provides learning experiences in the specific fields of the latest Kyoto Prize Laureates through personal seminars, sessions, interviews, lectures and workshops. It is designed to cover the travel and lodging expenses of journalists whose news organizations would otherwise not pay for such a trip to Japan . Immigration news reporting fellowship

A Long Island-based organization focused on immigration issues is offering two blogging fellowships. The group, Long Island Wins, says it "encourages dialogue about immigration, while advocating for immigration solutions that work for all Long Island residents."

The fellowship will last for six months, and the fellow will receive a $2,500 stipend (or approximately $50 per blog post).

"The fellow, who will work closely with the online editor, will be expected to produce at least two 500- to 800-word posts per week, and devote approximately 12-15 hours per week to the posts," the ad states. "Aside from more topical news stories, the fellow will also develop at least one ongoing investigative story during his or her fellowship. Recent J-school graduates, journalists re-entering the workforce, and established bloggers are all encouraged to apply. Prospective fellows should be based on Long Island, or nearby, and have access to a car."

Journalism fellowship in S. Korea

Journalists with five years experience can apply for a 10-day all-expenses paid trip to South Korea.

The fellowship, sponsored by the Korean Press Foundation and European Journalism Centre, includes lectures, meetings and interviews about politics, economy, society and culture. Its aim is "to promote comprehensive understanding of the Northeast Asian nation."

Fellows receive a payment in national currency equal to 500 euros to partially cover the flight ticket. Accommodation, local transport, interpretation and subsistence fees will be covered by the organizers.

"Eligible journalists will have five years full-time experience and command of the English language," the ad states. "Print journalists or editors are recommended to apply, but freelance journalists and broadcast journalists are also welcome."

Entry-level arts & culture journalism fellowship

Entry-level journalists interested in arts and culture journalism should consider applying for a new paid fellowship. The 8-month part-time positions, which can be done via telecommuting, will give two journalists the chance to write stories for magazines such as Mother Jones, ColorLines and WireTap.

"This part-time fellowship will run from May 15 to December 15, 2009," the ad states. "Each fellow will receive a $10,000 stipend as well as consistent mentorship and editorial support. Fellows are expected to work 2-3 full, workdays each week (about 20 hours), produce at least one monthly feature (written, podcast, video or photo slide show), one interview and four blog posts per month. Fellows will also attend a four-day journalism 'boot camp' (all expenses paid) at the end of May in San Francisco or New York City. This training period will also provide an opportunity to meet the editors, as well as Arts and Culture Advisory Board members representing a broad range of artists."

Free conference for ethnic media journalists

Ethnic media journalists can apply for a brief all-expenses paid program on urban environmental justice.

"The first part of the program, consisting of discussions with experts on environmental justice, plus field reporting and professional workshops, will take place in Los Angeles, beginning on the evening of April 30, 2009, and ending on May 6," the announcement states. "The Fellows will gather again in late July for sessions in Chicago."

Applicants must be employed by ethnic media news organizations or be independent journalists who regularly cover ethnic communities in the U.S. or racial justice issues. The program is sponsored by USC's Annenberg Institute for Justice and Journalism.

Journalism fellowship for South Africans

South African journalists can apply for a "a 3-to-6 month fellowship that allows a writer to pursue an in-depth - and groundbreaking - project of original research to be published in any medium."

The Ruth First Fellowship is open to journalists, writers, researchers and photographers who reside in South Africa.

Applicants should propose a subject that addresses a theme of current interest in South Africa and which would have engaged Ruth First. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend and research costs. They will be expected to present their work at a public event and to submit it for publication or broadcast in an appropriate outlet.
