Apply by Friday for George Polk Awards

This Friday, January 9, is the deadline to postmark applications for the George Polk Awards.

The prestigious journalism awards are issued annually by Long Island University in Brooklyn. There is no entry fee and all types of journalists -- print, radio, TV, Internet and photojournalists -- are eligible. Journalists do not have to be U.S. citizens and the media outlet does not have to be American, but all entries must be in English

The awards were established in 1949 to memorialize George Polk, a CBS correspondent slain covering the Greek civil war the previous year. They are awarded in various categories, which change annually and may include: Foreign Reporting, Radio Reporting, Photojournalism, Economics Reporting, Business Reporting, Labor Reporting, Investigative Reporting, Political Reporting, Sports Reporting, Legal Reporting, National Reporting, Online Reporting, Magazine Reporting, State Reporting, Education Reporting, Local Reporting and Television Reporting.
