Fall internship @ SF Bay Guardian

San Francisco Bay Guardian seeks reporting interns for the Fall 2008. The internship is unpaid, but seems like a good opportunity for young journalists to get clips and improve their newsgathering skills.

"The Bay Guardian offers opportunities for its interns to develop reporting skills and to write numerous articles," according to the ad. "We also provide workshops for interns on city politics, research and writing skills, and freelancing. Interns advance at their own pace."

Fall editorial internships begin the first week of September and run through the second week of January. Applications must be postmarked by August 10.

BBC offers trainee program

The BBC Journalism Trainee Scheme offers 21 journalists the chance to spend six months in the British Broadcasting Corporation learning about broadcasting. Paid placements are offered news and sports in the following areas: London, Belfast, Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, Cambridge, Leeds, Tonbridge Wells, Norwich and Nottingham.

"We [are] looking for good writers without a professional broadcasting background who could help us reflect our widely differing audiences," the website says. The program is extremely competitive. Last year, the inaugural year of the training program, the BBC received more than 1,400 applications for only 21 spots.

Free workshop in Iran on media & religion

I received this announcement via e-mail:
The First Students Workshop on Peace, Religion and Media will be held in Iran, from November 9th to 22nd, 2008m simultaneously with The Second International Conference on Religion and Media. It will provide a unique opportunity in a friendly environment for the young participants to explore the complicated relationship between religion and media and to enhance their knowledge and skills in redirecting the power of this relationship towards the positive aim of building a culture of peace.

We cordially invite young journalists, film and media activists, NGO workers, peace and human rights activists, community leaders and researchers who have at least a bachelor degree in related fields to apply for the workshop.

All costs of the program in Iran (accommodation, food, local transport, etc) will be covered for participants but they are responsible for their own airfare.

Paid fall photojournalism internship at Roanoke Times

Roanoke Times, a 100,000 circulation daily newspaper in Southwest Virginia, is seeking a paid intern to work from September to November for its photojournalism staff.

"This is an advanced internship where you will be working on daily assignments as well as stories and multimedia projects," according to the advertisement. "Current students and recent graduates are eligible. Our interns are treated as a staff photographer and are closely supervised and coached. You will cover a wide range of daily assignments and be strongly encouraged to produce one solid story. Applicants are supplied with Nikon digital gear, lighting equipment and mini-disc recorders (for audio slideshows) and should be technically proficient in an electronic darkroom."

Video journalism awards contest

The 4th International Video Journalism Awards is seeking entries for non-fiction videos from video journalists.

"The awards try to cover all known fields of video journalism: films from TV stations and publishing companies and productions from an independent background are awarded with a total of 12,000 of prize money going to the separated categories 'independent and online' and 'TV production,'" according to an e-mail from Albert Beckmann of vjawards.com

The deadline for entering films is Oct. 15, 2008. The awards are produced by vjawards.com and the host is ZDF German Television in Mainz.

Fall internships at Washington Post, CNN, etc.

Several journalism internship opportunities this fall in Washington, D.C.:
  1. The Washington Post is seeking a college student for an internship in its Arts & Living section.
  2. The newspaper is also seeking interns for the Sports section and Features section of The Express, its free 190,000-circulation weekday tabloid that's distributed on public transportation.
  3. CNN en Espanol is also looking for an intern in its D.C. bureau.
  4. Foreign Policy is also considering editorial interns for its magazine and website.
If you're attending college in the D.C. area or participating in an internship program such as The Washington Center, these internships might be a good way to get some journalism experience.

New journalism fellowship on U.S.-Japan issues

The Abe Fellowship for Journalists "offers stipends for journalists interested in pursuing individual short-term policy-related projects on topics of pressing concern to the United States and Japan."

The fellowship provides support for six weeks in Japan or the United States. The term may be divided between the principal destination and another country. The stipend is up to $23,500, which includes one roundtrip air ticket, $500 to prepare for overseas fieldwork, and support for interpretation based on requests.

Applicants must have at least five years of journalism experience. The application deadline is Sept. 15.
