Entry-level science journalism job @ Nature Medicine in NYC

Nature Medicine, an international biomedical journal, is offering a 6-month, full-time, paid science writing internship. Position starts in May and is based in New York City.

The intern will be closely involved in the editorial process and write news articles and briefs. This is not a paper-pushing internship! The person selected for the position will be reporting stories and working on editorial content full-time, including the blog.

Paid 6-month science journalism internship @ Chemical & Engineering News in DC

Chemical & Engineering News, the widely-read weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, seeks a science-writing intern for 2012.

C&EN reports current events in the chemical enterprise, including recent advances in research, education, industry, funding, and regulatory policy. C&EN reaches all 154,000 members of the ACS each week, and its online edition receives more than 14 million page views per year.

The candidate should be a highly motivated student or recent graduate with demonstrated interest in science writing and at least a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field. The intern will have a chance to write bylined news and feature stories for publication in C&EN and to generate multimedia and other content for C&EN Online. The intern will also help maintain C&EN’s social media presence.

During their 3-6 month stint, the intern is expected to work for C&EN full time (40 hours/wk) and will be paid $20.50/hr. The intern ideally will be based in our Washington, DC, headquarters; however, candidates unable to relocate may be considered. Starting and ending dates are flexible.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), the largest of the 27 institutes and centers comprising the National Institutes of Health (NIH and, the Federal Government's principal agency for cancer research and training, is offering 6-month and one-year paid health communication internships with benefits. 0tients.

The NCI recognizes that health information dissemination is key to raising public awareness about new cancer treatments, support for cancer patients and their families, and prevention strategies. To that end, in 1975 the NCI established the Health Communications Internship Program (HCIP) to attract individuals interested in careers in health communications and science writing.

The HCIP gives highly qualified graduate students and recent graduate degree recipients the opportunity to participate in vital health and science communications projects in one of the many offices that make up the NCI. Interns will select an area of emphasis: health communications or science writing. Six-month and one-year internship terms are offered.

Successful health communications applicants have some science background as well as experience and/or education in any of the following areas: public health, epidemiology, public relations, health education, communications, science writing, statistics, social marketing, or journalism. Successful science writing applicants have a science background plus experience in public relations and/or news writing with the ability to translate technical information into copy suitable for a lay audience.

The NIH main campus is located in Bethesda, Maryland. HCIP interns are placed in offices located in Bethesda or Rockville, Maryland. Both locations are accessible via public transportation.

Apply for a 3-day science journalism fellowship in San Diego

Journalists and writers have the exciting opportunity to apply for the Spring 2012 Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship that is part of Point Loma Nazarene University ’s mission to provide modern education in the sciences and reflective education in philosophy, society, and the arts.

The selected journalist will travel to San Diego , March 20-22, 2012, to attend the 27th annual Kyoto Prize ceremony, VIP presentations, laureate lectures and workshops. The American Society of Addiction Medicine, a non-profit medical society based in the Washington, D.C. area, seeks a publication intern to start in January. ASAM publishes four books, a quarterly scientific Journal, a quarterly newsletter, and a weekly electronic newsletter.

The publications intern will:
- Help develop and implement the society's social media platform
- Analyze and report weekly on the circulation of the electronic newsletter
- Research subscribers to add to the weekly electronic newsletter
- Organize the association library and develop a rotation cycle to display association books
- Assist in administrative tasks as needed

Entry-level editor job @ science magazine

Sea Technology, a 16,000-circulation monthly science magazine located in the Washington, D.C. area,  has an immediate opening for an assistant editor.

The assistant is responsible for all aspects of editorial content, including strategic planning and communicating with authors. Duties include editing and formatting contributed feature articles and news releases, performing layout and fact-checking tasks, compiling a biweekly e-newsletter, and occasionally developing and writing feature articles, reports and editorials. The assistant editor also represents the magazine at meetings with the industry, scientific community and government. This is not a telecommute position.

Applicant must have a bachelor's degree in a related field, and strong copyediting, research and writing talent is required. The applicant must possess the ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines and communicate well. He or she should be a quick learner with a solid basis in AP style rules and a willingness to adapt to house style.

Editing and writing experience is required, preferably working or interning for a monthly trade or newsstand magazine. Experience in the ocean sciences/engineering fields is a plus.

Solid knowledge of computer word processing, desktop publishing with InDesign and graphic software is required, and experience with HTML and e-newsletters is preferred.

Nature, a weekly scientific journal and science news magazine with 424,000 readers, is offering a 6-month, full-time, paid journalism internship.

$60K science journalism fellowship for Canadians

A $60,000 science journalism award provides training and writing opportunities overseas for a young Canadian journalist.

The fellowship is being funded by the International Development Research Centre, a Canadian organization aimed at providing research assistance to the Developing World, and Nature, the leading international scientific journal.

The IDRC Nature Science Journalism Award provides travel, living expenses and administrative costs for the winner, who will work in the London, England, office of Nature starting in Spring 2009. The winner will attend the World Conference of Science Journalists in summer 2009, and will also spend between two to four months in one or more developing countries as a science reporter.

"Nature’s editorial team will provide advice, training and support suited to the award winner’s skills and intentions in order to help him or her get everything possible out of the opportunity," the announcement states. "The intention is that the award will lead to a substantial body of work to be published by Nature. This could include work online, in print, in podcasts or all of the above."

Applicants should be either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who has at least three years experience as an English language journalist either in print, the broadcast media or online.

Applicants will be evaluated according to their current abilities and perceived promise; previous work on scientific topics and a proven interest in development issues will be taken into account. Every candidate should provide samples of his or her work, a CV and a covering letter as well as an outline of particular topics he or she would wish to cover in the field – a proposal, as it were. A clear and compelling plan for the use of reporting time will be rated very highly.

Media fellowship for U.K. scientists

If you're a scientist living in the United Kingdom and curious about how the media works, apply for a British Science Association Media Fellowship.

These fellowships offer researchers with at least 2 years of postgraduate experience the opportunity to spend between 3 and 8 weeks working with a print, broadcast, or online media organization. These fellowships are intended for scientists who want to stay in research (which doesn't mean you can't use one to make a career switch to science journalism).
