Paid photography internship @ Reno Gazette-Journal

The Reno Gazette-Journal, a 67,000-circulation daily newspaper in Nevada, is looking for a summer 2012 photography intern.

The internship is a paid 12-week commitment. However, start/end date is flexible depending on intern's college schedule. Interns would work directly with current staff members to shoot a variety of special events, sports, features and more. Multimedia opportunities also are available. One internship is for sportswriting and two internships are for photography. Pay is $475 per week.

Paid internships @ Indiana newspapers

Paid summer internships in reporting, graphic arts and photography are available at newspapers in Indiana for college students.

But there's a catch: Students must have at least one term remaining following completion of the internship and they must be residents of Indiana or attend an Indiana college or university

The "Pulliam Internships" run 10 weeks and pay $330 per week. Although most internships will occur during the summer months, they may be performed any time prior to Dec. 31 of the given year.

Skiing magazine, a Boulder, Colo.-based magazine focused on skiing, is offering 12-week paid internships in reporting and photojournalism during the summer and fall.

Interns receive a $1,200 stipend for 3 months. Their duties include: article research, fact checking, proofreading, writing articles, calling in gear for testing, participating in staff editorial meetings, and interviewing subjects.

"We try to keep the grunt work (shipping, filing, etc) to a minimum," the posting states. "Skiing Magazine is a small staff (four editors and two art directors), so interns work closely with staffers."

Paid photojournalism internships @ National Geographic

National Geographic Magazine is offering paid photography internships during the summer and fall of 2009.

The internships run 14 weeks and pay $480 per week. When on assignment away from the city, the Geographic pays all expenses. Transportation expenses to and from Washington at the start and conclusion of the internship are covered by the Society. The interns are responsible for their own housing.

"The program is an opportunity for young photographers to experience first-hand the rigors of life in the professional world," the announcement states. "It is also an opportunity for us at the Geographic to scrutinize the work of those in whom we may have further interest. We are proud that many of our regular 'shooters' are former summer interns."

Selection is based on a portfolio. Interns must be at least 21 years of age and U.S. citizens, or have appropriate student work documents. Both college and graduate students are eligible, and the selection committee will also consider someone not currently in school.

By January 31, send a portfolio of recent work (no more than 30 images), a resume, and a letter of recommendation from a photography teacher or established photojournalist. CDs are the preferred method of submission but portfolios may also be in the form of slides, prints or clippings of any combination, in color and/or black and white. Digital images should be sized to approximately 1600 wide, 72 dpi.

Paid photojournalism internships @ San Jose papers

Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, a chain of 11 weekly and biweekly newspapers that provides "fiercely local" coverage to San Jose area neighborhoods, seeks two paid photography interns for the summer of 2009.

The internship runs 16 weeks, from May 18 through September 4, and pays a $1,120 stipend. Mileage will also be reimbursed monthly. Your own digital equipment and transportation are required. Applicants must be available to work some evenings and weekends.
