San Francisco Business Times, a 21,500-circultion weekly newspaper that covers business news in the Bay Area, is offering paid editorial internships.

Interns report and write stories for both the print edition and web site as well as proofread and conduct research. The internship is for approximately 30-40 hours per week and pays $12 an hour.

Essential duties:
-Check the general email inbox for story ideas and reader feedback; respond to inquiries and pitches
-Interview writers and photographers for the Contributors page
-Assist with research for departments and feature sidebars
-Fact-check departments
-Contribute to social media efforts, AFAR.com, and the editors’ blog

Paid political journalism internship in Berkeley, Calif.

MapLight, a non-profit government watchdog news organization, is accepting applications for a writer/research internship. This is a paid position ($10/hr.), requiring a 20-hour a week commitment spread over three days (ideally Tuesday-Thursday) working in our downtown Berkeley office.

We are looking for a well-organized self-starter with a strong interest in illustrating the role money plays in American politics. This position will be responsible for writing at least two short-form items a week on upcoming bill actions. Please see the MapLight Web site for examples. This is an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates of journalism and political science interested in establishing their credentials in political reporting.

This position is responsible for tracking key legislation in the US Congress, conducting MapLight's unique bill position research, and drafting stories highlighting the influence of money in politics. This position will work in tandem with our current California reporter/researcher.

A typical day would be spent gleaning Congressional committee testimony, news articles, and organizations Web sites for instances of explicit support and opposition on key legislation most likely to get news coverage. The individual will need to be able to utilize online resources and prioritize which bills have the combination of impending committee or floor action and support/opposition from interest groups.

Wick Communications, a chain of 28 community newspapers in the West and South, is offering paid summer internships for reporting, photojournalism and graphics and page design.

The 12-week internships pay $360 a week plus overtime, with a travel allowance of $400 if you need to relocate for the summer and an additional $400 a month living expense allowance if needed.

Paid 8-week reporting internships are available year-round at daily newspapers nationwide through the Institute for Humane Studies.

During the internship, you'll get to report rather than merely fetch coffee. The average intern walks away with at least twenty clips. The internships take place during the spring, summer and fall.

No previous experience is necessary. We're looking for good writers passionate about liberty. Students from all disciplines, including political science and economics are encouraged to apply.

Placed at a daily newspaper, you'll work on a variety of assignments:
* writing features
* reporting hard news
* contributing opinion commentary
* pursuing investigative stories

Regular feedback on your work from editors and your fellow journalists will strengthen your abilities. And you'll develop a network of professional contacts that will help you launch a career in journalism.

You'll also participate in our Journalism & the Free Society summer workshop at Bryn Mawr College. At the weeklong workshop, you’ll learn market-based tools to understand today's most important political and social problems and receive advice from experienced journalists.

You'll also receive a $3,200 stipend and a travel allowance (interns must obtain their own room and board).

MAPLight.org, a Berkeley-based nonpartisan, nonprofit, government watchdog organization is offering a paid journalism internship.

If you are interested in participatory democracy and would like to help us provide citizens, bloggers and journalists with transparency tools that shine a light on the influence of money in politics an internship at MAPLight.org might be a good fit for you. The position is perfect for someone looking to gain experience pursuant to a communications career in government, public policy, or social justice. Media studies and J-school students are also encouraged to apply.

MAPLight.org’s communications interns possess strong computer, research and writing skills and work on a variety of communications programs. Primary responsibilities include: building media lists; developing story ideas; researching bills, legislators and interest groups; managing media database; updating newsroom pages on Web site; monitoring media coverage; proofreading documents; generating stories using Web site’s government transparency tools; writing media pitches; assisting program assistant with social media program goals; and more.

Paid internship @ computer magazine in San Fran

PCWorld/Macworld, a computer magazine based in San Francisco, is offering a paid internship.

The intern will be tasked with assisting lab staff with their daily tasks, helping to evaluate computer hardware, writing for publication online and in print, and studio photography assistance. The intern will also pitch, research and write blog entries and product reviews as well as participating in our Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking efforts.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for technology, including Windows- and Mac-based desktops and laptops, cameras and printers as well as some journalism or other writing experience. Applicants must be able to lift up to 50 lbs in order to move PCs, HDTVs, and other heavy equipment.

Candidates who are currently enrolled in a college journalism or writing program are preferred, though we will consider students in any discipline, along with recent graduates or career changers. This is a six- to nine-month on-site internship at PCWorld/Macworld's offices in San Francisco. The work week is flexible, but will not exceed 20 hours/week, at a pay rate of $10/hour. In addition, college credit is available to interns attending participating universities.

Bonnier Corporation, publisher of 50 magazines in the U.S., including Popular Science, Saveur, Parenting and Transworld Skateboarding, is looking for an intern for its new San Francisco-based R&D department. Our research and development efforts are focused on bleeding-edge technologies relevant to media and publishing, particularly as they pertain to new devices like the iPad and other emerging touch-screen devices. Bonnier R&D is in charge of the development of the company’s digital magazine platform, Mag+, as well as mobile applications and product development for the company’s magazine brands. In addition to the continued improvement of Mag+, our current projects include the creation of a new breed of mobile advertisements, a company-wide strategy for online video and TV content widgets, and the dissemination of new tech knowledge within the organization.

Intern duties will primarily focus on research (collection and analysis of existing published studies, coordination of focus groups and project-specific design research), and there will be ample opportunities to contribute to brainstorming meetings and concept development. We’re looking for smart, motivated individuals with a fresh perspective and a passion for technology and new media. Relevant university/graduate experience might include new media-focused journalism, interaction design, design research or information technology.
