The most important journalism tool

CubReporters.org is introducing a new feature: Journalism Tip of the Week.

Here's our inaugural tip:
A journalist's most important tool is not a notepad, tape recorder, computer or even the ability to write a story. A journalist's most important tool is her brain. As a writer, you have to cut through the flab of all the information around. You need need to question, question, question. What happened? Who does this affect? Why is this important? Critical thinking precedes good writing.
Newspaper editors agree.

Should you attend journalism school?

Journalism school is a big investment of time, money and energy. Before you make the commitment, you want to be 100 percent sure.

If you decide to go, carefully choose your journalism program. Find a program that’s strong in new media/multimedia journalism. Many journalism students are woefully prepared for the real world because their programs are not teaching them the latest skills they need. In addition, some programs are using very outdated equipment.

For more info, read "Is Journalism School for You?," the latest article in CubReporters.org's journalism career advice section.

Journalism fundamentals still key, editor says

The new crop of journalists needs to have the latest multimedia skills, a newspaper editor advises. But, more importantly, they need to know the fundamentals: critical thinking and fairness.

"The best thing an aspiring journalist can do is learn about audience needs and become an expert in numerous multimedia applications – video, web programming, etc.," Stu Shinske, executive editor of the Poughkeepsie Journal, recently told CubReporters.org.

"The key, however, is the ability to analytically think….they need to know how to distill information quickly, think on their feet, ask the right questions at the right time, and learn how to check personal preferences, biases and agendas at the door. Their skills will mean nothing if they’re not, first and foremost, objective…"

From time to time, I like to ask journalism experts and practitioners what tips they have for young journalists. Check out CubReporters.org's expanded journalism advice section for more insight from experts.

Are online journalism classes for you?

Online journalism classes and online journalism degrees are becoming an increasingly popular training method for aspiring journalists.

Many people are already working full-time in other careers when they decide to become a journalist. And traditional college programs may be too expensive or inconvenient.

Online classes save students time because they don't require commuting to campus and they tend to be much cheaper. In addition, taking an online course is a good way to test the waters before making a bigger commitment to studying journalism.

Our new online journalism courses webpage lists some universities that offer online journalism classes or even an online journalism degree.

Articles include spotlights about future events, profiles and features as well as reviews of selected dance performances. Emphasis is on Twin Cities dance, but we also cover touring shows from the U.S. and abroad. The job pays per-story.

    New media prof offers advice

Columbia journalism school's Sree Sreenivasan says young journalists should look online for opportunities to build their portfolio.

"Online publications, which often pay less than print publications (if they pay at all) are an option for beginning journos," says Sreenivasan, who runs the Columbia Journalism School's new media program and is WNBC's tech reporter. "Depending on the site's visibility, it may be a good way to get clips. As someone who did volunteer work for years (and still writes gratis, on occasion), anything that gets you clips is worth considering."

He adds: "Another tip is to start blogging. Having a smart, reporter's notebook-type blog is a way to show an editor your writing and your THINKING skills."

From time to time, I like to ask journalism experts and practitioners what tips they have for young journalists. I spoke with Sree in the spring for an article I wrote for Quill on how to get bylines. If you'd like to submit tips or share experiences, please e-mail me.
