Fox News Channel seeks campus correspondents

Palestra Media Group seeks college students to cover their universities for a national college media network which has recently affiliated with Fox News Channel.

Student reporters will be paid $150 to $235 per month depending on the content they produce. They also earn and additional $20 for each pre-approved feature story they create.

"Student reporters will cover their school’s athletic teams, music scene, traditions and other elements of life around campus," the job posting says. "Sports reporters will work with their school’s Sports Information Department to cover practices and games, shoot video of interviews with players and coaches and file short daily reports. Student reporters may also create feature stories profiling a noteworthy athlete, event or tradition at their school."

People, a weekly 4-million circulation magazine that covers celebrities and human interest stories, seeks a college student for an editorial internship beginning immediately.

Central Jersey newspaper seeks reporters

The Princeton Packet, a semi-weekly newspaper located between NYC and Philly, is seeking reporters to cover hard news and government meetings along with some features and enterprise stories. In addition, there are openings at the newspaper chain's other newspapers in Central New Jersey.

3-month photojournalism fellowship

The NPPA/Nikon Documentary Sabbatical Grant enables a working photojournalist to take a three month leave of absence to pursue a documentary project illuminating "The Changing Face of America." The National Press Photographers Association and Nikon Inc. award one elite photojournalist a $15,000 stipend to undertake the project unencumbered by daily assignments.

The program was suspended in 2007 due to lack of funding, but is returning this year, according to the National Press Photographers Association.

Entry-level opinion writer @ U.S.News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report is seeking a 12-month, paid, full-time intern for its Opinion section. The position is based in Washington, D.C.

Many journalism students are woefully prepared for the real world because their programs are not teaching them the latest skills they need. In addition, some programs are using very outdated equipment.

If you're interested in magazine journalism, consider interning at American Spa magazine. You'll receive a stipend and get to write articles.

The New York City-magazine is looking for editorial interns for the fall and winter semesters who are interested in the travel, beauty and health industries. "This is a great opportunity to get clips," the posting says.

Don't overlook this opportunity. While it may not be your dream internship, keep in mind that magazine journalism is a very competitive field. Everyone needs to start somewhere and this internship should help you get some solid experience.

L.A. tv station seeks freelance newswriter

KTLA-TV, a.k.a. Channel 5 in Los Angeles, seeks a freelance writer to assist the news producer in putting newscasts together.

Responsibilities include: writing news stories; directing the editing of video taped stories for broadcasts; basic non-linear editing/clip editing duties; and logging video feeds. The writer also must learn the responsibilities of the associate producer and program producer so as to be prepared to produce a program as needed.

Candidates should have experience in broadcast or print journalism.

New Dallas paper seeks freelancers

Paid internship @ Washingtonian Magazine

Washingtonian, a monthly magazine read by 400,000 people in the D.C. area, offers year-round paid internships to college students and recent graduates.

Editorial interns work full-time, make $7 per hour and factcheck, research and write stories. In addition, interns receive significant mentoring. Photography and online editing internships are also available.

Application deadlines: Nov. 1 for a Spring internship (running from January to May); March 1 for Summer (June-August); and July 1 for Fall (September-December).

Journalism fundamentals still key, editor says

The new crop of journalists needs to have the latest multimedia skills, a newspaper editor advises. But, more importantly, they need to know the fundamentals: critical thinking and fairness.

"The best thing an aspiring journalist can do is learn about audience needs and become an expert in numerous multimedia applications – video, web programming, etc.," Stu Shinske, executive editor of the Poughkeepsie Journal, recently told CubReporters.org.

"The key, however, is the ability to analytically think….they need to know how to distill information quickly, think on their feet, ask the right questions at the right time, and learn how to check personal preferences, biases and agendas at the door. Their skills will mean nothing if they’re not, first and foremost, objective…"

2009 summer internship applications due soon!

The summer may have just ended, but it's already time to start planning for a journalism internship next summer.

Many of the top newspapers and magazines have early fall deadlines for their 2009 paid summer internship programs. For example:

These are great internships, if you can get them. You'll make good money (the NYT pays $924 per week), get to do substantive work (take photos, write articles, etc.) and learn from the best and brightest journalists in the world.

But the applications can be very involved. The Post, for example, requires essays and recommendation letters. So, start working on your application ASAP. This isn't something you can do the day before it's due.

The Institute on Political Journalism invites students to attend a two-day conference, from Nov. 7-8, in Washington, D.C., for some post-election reflection and fun. Come hone your professional skills, network with working journalists, meet fellow journalism students from across the county.

Are online journalism classes for you?

Online journalism classes and online journalism degrees are becoming an increasingly popular training method for aspiring journalists.

Many people are already working full-time in other careers when they decide to become a journalist. And traditional college programs may be too expensive or inconvenient.

Online classes save students time because they don't require commuting to campus and they tend to be much cheaper. In addition, taking an online course is a good way to test the waters before making a bigger commitment to studying journalism.

Irish Times fellowship for young journalist

The Douglas Gageby Fellowship is awarded annually by the Irish Times Trust to a young journalist at the beginning of his/her career for a sustained reporting project on a particular theme. The fellow’s work is published in weekly series for the paper lasting up to three months.

The fellowship provides “attractive financial support and agreed expenses,” according to its official website. “The recipient will be required to complete his/her project within an agreed time-frame and submit articles based on his/her research for publication in The Irish Times. The recipient must be in a position to take up the fellowship within four months of the date of award.”

The Norwich Bulletin, a 27,000-circulation daily newspaper in Eastern Connecticut, is seeking freelance reporters to help cover local news.

"The ideal candidate will have at least three years’ experience and will be able to cover a beat outside of town hall – focusing on the issues and news as they relate to residents, and putting them in context," the ad says. "Knowledge of the two local Indian casinos is a plus."

Central Wisconsin paper seeks reporter

Reedsburg Times Press, a small twice-weekly newspaper located 55 miles from Madison, is seeking a general assignment reporter.

"This reporter will cover news and take photos as assigned by the editor," the ad says. "Duties will include writing news and feature stories, interviewing sources and researching data for news and feature articles, developing sources and recognizing newsworthiness of events in the area."

YouTube offers $10,000 contest for student journalists

YouTube and the Pulitzer Center are holding a contest that allows non-professional, aspiring journalists the chance to tell stories that might not otherwise be covered by traditional media.

The contest, dubbed "Project: Report," consists of three rounds. In each round, reporters will be given an assignment to complete. Each of these assignments gives people an opportunity to report on the important individuals, issues, and communities in their lives that others do not yet know about. You can compete is just one round, although only those who compete in all three will be eligible for the grand prize.

Winners from each round will receive technology prizes from Sony VAIO and Intel, and the grand prize winner will be granted a $10,000 journalism fellowship with the Pulitzer Center to report on a story outside of their home country.

H.S. football stringers needed near Atlanta

Beacon Media Companies, which publishes newspapers in the Atlanta area, is seeking sports writers to cover football games on Friday nights from now until the end of the season.

"Your duties would be to attend the game, keep stats, get quotes from coaches and players afterward and write a story on deadline for next-day publication," the advertisement states. "We cover games for seven high schools, and most of those games take place in north Fulton or east Cobb County."

Two of the biggest challenges in finding your first journalism job are 1) figuring out which media outlets are willing to hire entry-level candidates, and b) making sure your resume gets in the right person's hands.

This may help.

It's a list of recruiters who attended a journalism job fair at a major j-school. All kinds of media outlets are listed: newspapers, magazines, websites, radio and TV stations. Since they were recruiting at a journalism school, chances are they're willing to consider entry-level candidates. Some outlets seem to have sent reporters to the event, but many sent recruiters -- and their names and contact info are listed. The list is from 2007 (2008 wasn't available), so some info may no longer be correct.

Paid photojournalism internships at Kansas paper

The Hutchinson News, a 40,000 circulation newspaper covering southwest and south-central Kansas, offers year-round paid photojournalism internships.

Internships are offered in the winter (January to May), summer (June to August), and fall (September to December). College photojournalism students with two years of college experience and recent graduates will be considered. Deadlines to apply are October 15 for spring; March 15th for summer; and July 1st for fall.

"The candidate will be treated as a staff photographer working 40-hour weeks during the paid internship," the newspaper says. "The candidate will work closely with the photo editor and staff photographers. The candidate will travel and transmit photos from remote locations, prepare images for publication, and generate their own photo ideas."

World's 2nd-largest paper seeks D.C. news assistant

The Asahi Shimbun, a Tokyo-based daily newspaper with a circulation over 8 million, seeks a news assistant for its Washington, D.C. bureau.

"Duties include assisting our Washington-based diplomatic correspondents with articles by conducting thorough background research, attending press briefings, gathering news and views, arranging interviews, and closely following developments in the area of U.S. defense and security, primarily covering the Pentagon," the job advertisement says. "Some administrative support, such as transcribing interviews and other assignments, is also required."

Japanese language is helpful but not required. The position pays about $40,000 along with overtime. It also includes benefits.

Entry-level reporter job near Albany, NY

The Post-Star, a daily newspaper in Glenn Falls, N.Y., with a 35,000 circulation, is seeking a full-time general assignment reporter to work the nigh shift.

"This reporter is responsible for covering all breaking news at night and for covering meetings, events and general-interest topics as directed by the city desk. A mini-beat involving one or more local communities (currently Moreau and Lake George) has traditionally been part of this reporter's duties."

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is seeking a freelance dance critic. Coverage includes about modern, ballet, jazz, ethnic and dance/theater. Santa Ynez Valley Journal, a 22,000 circulation weekly newspaper in Santa Barbara, Calif.'s wine country, has two openings:

1. COPY EDITOR: Experienced, part-time copy editor needed to work in the office. Candidates will be knowledgeable in proofing and copy editing using the AP stylebook. The candidates will have to meet deadlines. Candidates who live in Santa Ynez and the surrounding areas are best qualified.

$500/wk spring journalism internship in D.C.

The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks four reporting interns from January to May 2009. The full-time internships are in the Washington, D.C. office and pay a $500 weekly stipend.

The Chronicle reports on news concerning colleges and universities. Its website gets 12 million page views per month and its newspaper has 350,000 readers.

Four interns will be hired; two spots will be reserved for undergraduates. Academic credit can also be arranged. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2008.

"The interns' primary responsibilities are reporting and writing daily news articles for The Chronicle's Web site (which usually appear subsequently in print), contributing brief features to the "Short Subjects" section, writing news articles for other sections of the newspaper, and doing research for special projects," according to the ad. "There is very little grunt work. Interns who prove themselves as reporters and writers are often asked to write full-length features."

New media prof offers advice

Columbia journalism school's Sree Sreenivasan says young journalists should look online for opportunities to build their portfolio.

"Online publications, which often pay less than print publications (if they pay at all) are an option for beginning journos," says Sreenivasan, who runs the Columbia Journalism School's new media program and is WNBC's tech reporter. "Depending on the site's visibility, it may be a good way to get clips. As someone who did volunteer work for years (and still writes gratis, on occasion), anything that gets you clips is worth considering."

He adds: "Another tip is to start blogging. Having a smart, reporter's notebook-type blog is a way to show an editor your writing and your THINKING skills."

Paid internship at D.C. television network

MHz Networks, an international television network headquartered in the Washington, D.C. area, is seeking two paid interns to assist its programming team in reviewing and previewing content for broadcast air.

"In this position, you will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to be a producer," according to the internship advertisement. "College Photographer of the Year" contest
