A Reuters internship offers student journalists a global audience of leading media outlets, financial decision-makers and savvy Internet readers with a potential audience of a billion people."

Candidates should have a strong ability to write in English and native or near-native fluency in Japanese. They should be a college senior or graduate student with a background in journalism and an interest in business news writing. Preference will be given to candidates with the right to work in Japan and who plan to base themselves in Tokyo for the summer.

Seeking your comments for journalism book

I’m under contract with a popular career guide publisher to write a book on how to become a journalist in the Digital Age.

Newark Star-Ledger seeks 20 entry-level reporters

To help fill holes left by a recent mass exodus of staffers via buyout, the Newark Star-Ledger is reportedly looking to immediately hire 20 interns to serve at least one year as bureau reporters. The 373,000-circulation daily newspaper located next to Manhattan is also expected to expand its copy-editing internships, Crain's New York Business reported.

The full-time positions pay about $17 per hour (which would work out to $35,000 per year for a full-time job) and include limited benefits.

Maclean's, a 500,000-circulation weekly magazine that covers Canadian politics, pop culture and events, offers one-year paid internships beginning in May.

These reporting positions are based in Toronto and pays $22,500.

"There are reporting/writing positions on the main city desk in Manhattan and in the three borough offices: Queens, Bronx, and Brooklyn. In the summer months only, the Daily News has a limited number of positions that come with a $350/week (or $70/day) stipend. The positions are full-time reporting/writing internships that run 10 to 12 weeks long. There is one sports position and six or seven city desk/news positions. These positions are extremely competitive and have increasingly gone to graduate students. The deadline is February 1.

Unpaid/for-credit positions are available for the spring and fall semesters -- as well as over the summer. Students must get credit to qualify and usually must commit to two days a week (more is welcome). There is a rolling deadline.

The Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that produces original investigative journalism on issues of public concern, is offering paid internships in the spring and/or summer in its New York and D.C. offices. The position pays $10 per hour.

"Assignments may include everything from poring through government reports, records, and statistics to interviewing government officials, academics, economists, activists, whistleblowers, and others," the ad states. The National Journalism Center is seeking Spring and Summer interns, who will be placed at media outlets around the Washington. D.C. area, gaining real-world experience from professionals in the field.

Interns receive a $1,000 per month stipend for the duration of the 12-week program. Students can take their internships for credit, as well.

High school journalism camp @ Yale

Connecticut high school students can apply for a free week-long summer journalism program at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

The Yale Daily News Summer Journalism Program is run entirely by undergraduate staff members of the Yale Daily News. During the week, high school students participate in workshops on the fundamentals of reporting and writing, attend lectures by guest speakers from major national publications, and work hands-on reporting a story. The week culminates with the production of an issue of the Yale Daily News.

The free program is limited to Connecticut residents and is geared toward those with writing or journalism experience, but any Connecticut high school student with an interest in journalism, writing or photography may apply. The program will be held August 17 through August 22, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. There is no housing available in New Haven, and students are expected to return home each evening.

Postgraduate journalism scholarships in the UK

The Scott Trust, owner of Guardian Media Group, offers scholarships to 10 students each year to do postgraduate study in either: newspaper/online journalism; broadcast journalism; or technology.

The scholarship pays for tuition fees and provides a living allowance of £5,000. The course involves several weeks’ work experience within Guardian Media Group.

According to the website, selection criteria is: "A graduate and a permanent resident in the United Kingdom, ideally you will have had some basic paid or unpaid work experience in journalism, or similar experience, and need the financial support to progress in your career. You will also have built up a portfolio of your work or evidence of your journalism/writing/blogging, and you will be able to show commitment to a career in media."

The Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship grants $1,500 annually to a junior or senior college student pursuing a degree in journalism or a related field. Paid internship to cover Obama for TV show

The United Kingdom's top network news and current affairs program, is offering a paid internship to a young American journalist beginning January 2009 to assist with its coverage of the presidential inauguration of Barrack Obama.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands on experience with one of the world’s most respected news organisations, and most of our interns have gone on to top jobs in the industry worldwide," the advertisement states.

The internship, at the station's Washington bureau just steps away from the Capitol, pays $500 per month for up to 4 months, starting January 5th. The position is 5 days a week, 9am-5pm every day. It is open to only U.S. citizens, or applicants who already hold a valid work permit or green card.

Duties include researching for both breaking stories and longer investigative films, looking after guests (pundits, politicians, military generals), working through creative filming ideas and bringing those ideas to broadcast.

The station's 50-minute program is broadcast nightly in a peak slot on Britain's Channel 4, one of the best-known UK stations. It is made in London by Independent Television News (ITN), the main commercial rival to the BBC and broadcast partner to both CNN and NBC.

Paid science journalism internship

Scientific Blogging, a website whose stories are syndicated by Reuters, USA Today, Yahoo! and other popular media outlets, is offering a paid internship in science journalism at its Sacramento area office from January to April 2009.

The intern will work 12 hours per week at the website's Folsom, Calif. office. "The ideal candidate will be either a science student with an interest in science journalism or a journalism student with an understanding of broad science issues," the internship posting states.

6-month paid internships @ Chattanooga Times Free Press

The Chattanooga Times Free Press, an 80,000 circulation daily newspaper in Tennessee, offers six-month paid internships in all the newsroom crafts: photography, multimedia, news, features, copy editing and page design. Interns are paid $400 per week.

Internships begin in in January and July. There are no hard deadlines.

"Our internships are awarded based on merit," the job ad states. "Considerations include previous internships, campus media experience and quality of work samples."

Modernizing your journalism job resume

Increasingly, media companies are asking for applications to be sent electronically: either via e-mail or by completing an online form.

If you're reading this blog post, surely you know how to e-mail a cover letter and attach your resume as a file to it. But how are you supposed to send your clips?

Electronically.

Scan and save your publication clips as PDFs that can be attached as e-mail files or uploaded to a website (like this). Upload broadcast clips to YouTube or (if over 10 minutes) Google Video and e-mail the links (like this). While a newspaper or station may have posted your materials on its website, those links often expire or cost money to access. So, make your own electronic copies of your work samples.

Better yet, create your own website and upload your portfolio to that. You can even convert your resume into a webpage. This way you won't inadvertently disqualify yourself from consideration for a job because an editor's using software that can't open your document file. Believe me, it happens. Moreover, you'll impress prospective bosses with your new media skills and separate yourself from other applicants.

Entry-level reporter @ New Republic

The New Republic is looking for reporter-researchers for its 2009-2010 paid internship program.

Job duties include reporting, researching, and fact-checking for TNR and TNR Online stories; formatting articles and blog posts for the Web; and performing occasional clerical tasks. Reporter-researchers work closely with writers and editors, and they have an open invitation to pitch magazine or Web articles.

Most reporter-researchers finish their program with a substantial portfolio of clips and have gone on to work almost everywhere in journalism--including TNR itself. Political journalism experience is preferred (but not imperative); fluency with LexisNexis and other search techniques, a willingness to put in long nights fact-checking, and a sense of humor are mandatory.

Seeking quotes for journalism careers book

I’m under contract with a popular career guide publisher to write a book on how to become a journalist in the Digital Age.

The book is for students and entry-level job seekers. It focuses on what skills, education, training, experience, etc. will be necessary to land a good job and be a successful journalist in the coming 5-10 years. The release date is this spring.

I want to hear from working journalists, media company recruiters and career services staff on stuff like: What types of jobs are out there? What types of jobs have been scaled back? What sort of jobs will there be in the future? Realistically, what kinds of jobs can someone get right out of college? What skills do young journalists need and where can they get training? The Hesperia Star, a 20,000 weekly newspaper in California's Mojave Desert, is offering internships during the Christmas break for students with an interest in journalism.

"Interns must be at least 16 years old and should have a demonstrated interest in journalism," according to the newspaper. "High school and college-level journalism students are particularly encouraged. Interns perform a variety of newsroom tasks to assist reporters, photographers and editors. Students can get paid internships at various New York state newspapers via the New York Press Association Foundation.

Internships are available for reporting, photography, graphics and advertising. The Buffalo News, Village Voice, AM New York, Poughkeepsie Journal, Niagara Gazette and The Saratogian are just some of the many participating newspapers.

Students who are accepted into the program will earn a net stipend of $1,500 for the eight week internship. The deadline to apply is March 1.

Short-term investigative journalism fellowships

Texas Watchdog, a new nonpartisan website devoted to investigating waste, fraud and corruption in government, offers fellowships for those interested in learning investigative and enterprise reporting.

The three-month fellowships are open to bloggers, journalism students and interested residents. Shorter-term programs, including weekend training seminars, are available. The fellowships comes with a small monthly stipend. There are also guest speakers, from award-winning journalists who are skilled in digging to political operatives who work at hiding information from the public and are willing to tell their secrets.

"The fellows accepted into the Houston-based program will learn investigative skills by digging into Texas state and local government," organizers said. "They will produce investigative reports based on their findings, which will include both long-term projects and daily updates published on our Web site. Award-winning journalists who specialize in investigating state and local government will advise and mentor fellows."

Paid summer internships @ L.A. Times

The Los Angeles Times, the 4th-largest daily newspaper in the U.S., is offering 10-week paid summer internships in its news, sports, business, features, Washington bureau, photography and online departments.

Undergraduate college students, as well as graduates who have finished school within six months of the internship start, are eligible. Little training is offered, according to the newspaper's website, so previous internship experience is preferred. Interns also need a driver's license and access to a car.

ESPN is offering year-round paid internships in broadcast, print and online journalism.

In addition to ESPN's many English-language television and radio channels, ESPN also offers paid internships at the New York City-based ESPN: The Magazine and ESPN.com.

And, ESPN also offers internships with the Spanish-language ESPN Deportes and ESPNDeportes.com, as well as ESPN International and other multi-lingual opportunities.
