5 media outlets that are hiring journalists

The journalism job market invariably seems bad. It's much more common to hear about media companies laying off employees than to hear about companies looking to hire. But below are five media outlets that are hiring right now -- and some have entry level reporter openings.

1. Bloomberg: As the cover story of this month's American Journalism Review notes about the business news organization, "Bloomberg is spending, hiring, opening new outposts, launching fresh enterprises and raising the stakes."

2. Patch.com: While AOL recently made large cuts to its editorial staff, it's still hiring for Patch.com, its new chain of hyperlocal news sites. Young journalists are often hired to oversee a news site for a particular community. It's hard work, but you'll get to do it all -- write your own stories, set the news agenda, hire freelancers, edit stories, shoot video, take photos, tweet and more. More than 70 editorial positions are available at the moment.

3. Politico: Although it was founded in 2007, the multimedia political journalism organization is already profitable, its editor recently told Columbia Journalism Review. And it's expanding. In February, the Washington, D.C.-based company launched Politico Pro, "a subscription service providing highly detailed, rapid-fire reporting on the politics of energy, technology and health care." Click here to see Politico's current job openings.

4. Business Insider: The New York City-based business website launched in 2009 and receives 6.3 million unique monthly visitors. According to its website, "Business Insider has a bunch of openings right now. We are growing rapidly and offer a dynamic environment where you can learn fast and help shape the future of the company. We also offer a competitive salary and excellent benefits."

5. CNN: The 24-hour cable news station posted about dozens of job openings and paid internships on its careers page in March. Click here to view the latest opportunities.

You should know how the web works, and understand what makes a great headline, slideshow and piece of analysis. At least one year of experience writing about sports online helps, as does a familiarity with the tone and pace of Sports Page.
